Barbie dolls were introduced in North America by Mattel Toys in 1959, and have never lost their appeal to young girls from that day to this.

Barbie's classic appeal as a toy and as a Christmas gift isn't going to go away, this year or anytime soon.

Capitalizing on the princess passion so many young girls harbor these days, the folks at Universal Studios and Mattel have developed a veritable princess bonanza with the "Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses" dolls and DVD. Not to be confused (or linked too closely) with the Brothers Grimm fairy tale of the same name, this story deals with a dozen princesses who are taught royal etiquette by a duchess who does not believe in fun and games. Genevieve (played by that star of stage and screen, Barbie) and her sisters find a way to bring dancing and joy back into their lives. The glamorous Genevieve doll is sure to spark hours of imaginary playtime among girls, whether they've seen the movie or not. Genevieve's skirt is a froth of pink and gold that actually spins and lights up! Her adorable little kitten accompanies Genevieve/Barbie, and is decked out in her own rose-colored gown and gold crown. Requires two "AAA" batteries (not included). Barbie in The 12 Dancing Princesses: Magical Dance Castle
Every princess needs a castle; a pack of a dozen princesses needs a truly fantastic one. Based on the "Barbie and the 12 Dancing Princesses" DVD (which is very loosely based on the Grimm's fairy tale), this two-story fortress is equipped with enough glamour, sumptuousness, and secret passageways to satisfy the most fanciful of imaginations. Decked out with the standard (in royal circles, anyway) turrets and alcoves, the castle features sleeping space for all 12 princesses (one bed expands to sleep 9, and the dining table converts to a bed for the triplets), an upstairs vanity, eating area with table and chairs, and a staircase leading to a "hidden" door, behind which is a magical dance pavilion with a spinning surface. The sisters, whose strict aunt won't allow dancing, can secretly dance to their heart's content, accompanied by music. Girls who are deep in the throes of princess adoration will be over the moon when they see this two-sided playset.
